The New, or Dark, moon, happens when the moon is completely in Earth’s shadow with no illumination. This is a daytime moon, seen in the sky with the sun. The moon, the earth, and the sun are in alignment during a new moon (with the moon in the middle). Although the moon appears to be in total darkness from the earth, half of it is lit by the sun, as always, except that the lit side is on the far side from earth instead of the near side as it is during a full moon.
Technically speaking, the dark moon is the day with absolutely no light (indicated by the calendar symbol) while the new moon is the next day.
This is a very short period of very low energy. Some believe no magic workings at all should be attempted during this time, only reflection and meditation, or maybe a bit of divination to see what the next step is.
Since the moon is hidden during this time, if you do want to attempt magical workings, they should be geared to obfuscation and what’s hidden (or needs to be hidden), such as our deepest fears and passions.
A Black moon is the second new moon in a calendar month or the third new moon in a season of four full moons. The next is 31 July 2019 and then 18 August 2020.
2019 Solar Eclipses: 5 January, 2 July, 26 December. Solar eclipses always happen during a dark moon.
