Burner Days

glyph for burner day by Michael Giza

The 16 classical burner days are scattered throughout the Tzolkin, four for each cardinal direction. These are festival days, when explosive dynamics come to the forefront on a planetary or societal level. It is time to burn off extra restless energy in socially approved ways, for purification and stress relief, to send energy out and away.

Burner days are always the day-signs Oc/ Izcuintli, Men/Cuauhtli, Ahau/Xochitl, and Chicchan/Coatl, and always the numbers 3, 4, 10 and 11.

The burner days are a 65-day rhythm within the 260-day framework of the sacred calendar, dividing the calendar into four “seasons” ruled by the cardinal directions—Oc is North, Men is West, Ahau is South, and Chicchan is East.

The strongest burner days are those numbered 4, the time of the actual burner ceremony. The prepara- tion for the ceremony began 40 days earlier, on the 3 day, and continued on the 10 day. Twenty days after the main burner day, the festival officially ended on the 11 day. Important ceremonial gatherings, on all the burner days in each season, were formally scheduled times to release energy and interact with a large group of people.

Look for world happening on these days (or within 24 hours), or events which affect a large number of people. The burner days’ intense power tends to touch people in groups. These are times to have a party and to let off steam and frustration. You may feel like a more social creature and a person who can help others release anxiety and tension.

These are extrovert days, when energy moves out and away. The symbol is flames coming from an offering bowl.
